Skye has learn to swim all by herself, she can even swim underwater for a little bit. But she's is not quite strong enough to go octopus hunting with the bigger kids. Sadly, she watches them swim off to the rocks where the little tentacled creatures hide. Later she clapped with joy as five year old Luca triumphantly returned, holding his first octopus.
So I decided to buy her a cheap fishing rod. She could join the real fishermen on the pier and pretend to fish with them. I found a rod in the beach shop and we took it onto the end of the pier at sunset the other day. The fishermen stopped fishing and examined Skyes rod seriously.
"No, no, this hook won't do!"
"Here, replace it with one of mine,"
"You need worms? Help yourself!"
Five minutes later Skye was happily dipping her fishing rod into the sea, watching the little pink float bob up and down. Suddenly the float disappeared and I helped her pull up the hook. She had caught a fish! The fisherman came over and unhooked it, tucking the still wriggling fish into her pocket. She grinned and giggled, then ran off around the pier to show everyone she knew, "I caught a fish! Look!" After everone had seen it and complimented her she gracefully handed it over to a fisherman who had collected a few little fishes in a plastic bag.
If I keep up the training she should soon be bringing dinner home...
