What could this stack of dishes mean? Just sitting there waiting to be filled...
And here on the stove..a huge pot of cooked wheat, just sitting waiting...
And all those eggs, and candied fruit. and whole bottles of cinnamon and vanilla...what is Nonno up to?
It's pastiera time! This yeaer nonno is making 20 pastiere, all at once! Here's a bucket of sweet ricotta ready and waiting.
And here on the table are the ingredients for the pastry. We like watching Nonno make pastry..
He makes two huge piles of flour, sugar, butter, eggs right in the middle of the table and the slowly, just using one hand, squeezes it all together, mixing it slowly and precisely...
Until he has two big rolls of pastry which he wraps gently in teacloths and leaves in the fridge overnight.

I am feeling very connected to Nonno right now as I'm making pastiera here too :) Not 20 though, I'm settling for 2! :D

My son loved watching his nono cook things up in the kitchen also.
How great for Charlie she'll cherish thsoe memories always, and no one will make those pateries as good or as tastey as her nono! Mark my words.
